how "real" are we?

I find myself wondering as I read people's blogs, just how "real" they're being when they write. I read blogs and from what I get off the page, I make assumptions as to who these people really are. I decide who I think I would really get along with, who would make me laugh, who would probably aggravate me in real life (y'all think it too I know you do), who I could hang out with, and who I could possibly be real life bff's with.

And then I wonder, how "real" is the person being portrayed?

I know I'm not always myself on here. I sometimes worry about offending someone or someone deciding I'm boring or just not worth them stopping by to read. So I write as how I think people would want me too.

Then sometimes I hit my "I don't care what people think" mode, and I write about my lack of love for popular music or my tendency to think about random and ridiculous things.

I've decided to stop worrying about what people think. I don't want to look back at this blog years later and go "What the crap was I talking about? I don't think like that?!". I'm not worrying about a lack of comments on a post, or losing a follower.

I'm writing for me.

So in an effort to be more "real", here's a few things you might not know about me... in all it's unpretty glory.

I can't stand Paula Deen. She's like nails on a chalkboard to me. I hate when people hear where I'm from and immediately associate it with her. What about the fact that Sherman didn't burn our town because he thought it was too "beautiful"!?

Not important. But that cooking lady has a restaurant there and that's the best thing ever. Gah. Nails on a chalkboard. She makes me crazy.

I will not spend a lot of money on clothes. I just can't do it. I will straight up rock a dress from Wal-Mart before I'll pay full price anywhere. Now a clearance sell? Bring it.

I do not own a single button down shirt. Just thinking about a starched collar makes me feel like my throat is closing in. I also don't own a pair of khakis. I guess the truth is out. I am not a preppy dresser. I love that look on people. I think it's so classic, but when I go shopping I never buy that style.

I can't stand Lilly Pulitzer. Grown women with pastel animals on their clothes?! Really. I'm the only one who sees a problem there?!

I have a tendency to judge people pretty quickly. Nine times out of ten, I find that my judgment was completely off base. Every time that happens I tell myself that I really shouldn't be so judgmental. And I'm not any more.

Til the next time I am.. Oops.

I think that's enough for one day. I'd rather not scare off everyone in one post.

I think the best thing about blogging is meeting so many different types of people. I adore my blog friends. They've saved me multiple times when I've had a problem or what not and I love them for it. I just wanted to make sure that I was being "real" with you guys as you deserve it. I'm not always super happy go lucky and chill (although I like to pretend I am..)

Sometimes I'm an anxiety ridden basket case. Sometimes I drop the f-bomb multiple times in a hour day. Sometimes I want to kill my husband because I'm a hormonal mess. Sometimes I want to flip the world a bird. And sometimes I just want to curl up with a twelve pack and forget about life for a while.

Those are what make me "real".

i consider myself a lady AND my favorite word is the F-bomb. it expresses all manner of emotions :) and agreed on lilly pulitzer. i don't get it. and you could have some really nice stuff for what it costs to look like a 5-year old!

I know EXACTLY what you mean! Sometimes I want to say things, but I'm not sure if people will know I'm being sarcastic so I think about it for a while and make a decision. I think I'm just going to go with it now though...hopefully people will know when I'm kidding and if they don't then I guess its just too bad for them!

PS - I don't own a true button up shirt either...or khakis...aside from my maternity clothes. Since I've become pregnant I found a pair of khaki shorts that work and a couple button up (but empire waist type) longer shirts...nothing that would be high end work wear if you know what I mean. BUT, like you, I like the style and would always try that stuff on and then I'd be like, "Hmm...this is definitely not something I can pull off today, maybe next time". Is there ever a next time? No.

I love that you don't like Lilly Pulitzer stuff!! I just don't get it. I know hate is a strong word, but I borderline h.a.t.e. LP. And Vera Bradley stuff.

Gosh, it feels so good to get that off my chest. ☺

Me too, to just about everything you said. I hate Paula Dean, too. So annoying. And yes to about everything else you said. Amen!

I don't even like collars on Sarah's cotton baby clothes!

I appreciate your honesty! I think it's so much more important to to be true to yourself than to write for others so you can gain "followers". I try to be true to myself and yes, I'm disappointed when a post doesn't get any comments, but then I know I'm not writing just to get comments.

P.S. I do like a crisp button up shirt though... :)

Oh my word I could kiss you right now!!!
:-)
I have been thinking about the exact same thing.
I also censor myself on my blog...worry about what people will think.

I am turning over a new leaf...and doing the same!

Great post!!!

AMEN!! I was just talking with a friend about this last night! I always censor myself and throw away blog posts because I worry about what reader will think. I need to stop doing that, it really defeats the purpose of blogging in the first place!

I hate reading blogs that are clearly only people pleasers. You know the type--that just write for their audience and seem so...fake. It is such a turn off to me! I would much rather read a blog about someone, faults and all, weird opinions, passions, beliefs, etc.

I try to do the same, but at the same time, I try to not be malicious. And I don't talk politics just because it isn't safe--people are too cut throat with their political beliefs and I am certainly not going to put myself in the middle of the fire fight!

By the way, LP is freaking hideous and looks like something out of those bad 80s family pictures where the mother and daughters all wear the same horrid flowered dress to church. And Vera Bradley? Oh don't even get my started. Ack.

thank you so much for that!! You are one of my favorite bloggers! I think we might be twins seperated at birth........ ha-ha-ha....
I love the fact that we "judge" then promise that we will NEVER do that again and boom, right back to judging........ heehhee

I don't even know who that Lily person is....

But I do love myself a good rant with F-bombs in it.

And I loved you before, but now that I know you love to detonate the F-bomb.....well, it just went to a whole new level. :)

LOVE this post and your honesty. I really try to be myself on my blog (hence the fact that most of my posts include food and alcohol) but I do find it difficult to be completely honest. My parents, my in-laws, extended family, many real-life friends and our parent's friends all read my blog regularly. I started the blog to help keep our friends and family to live far away up to date on our lives. But it does make it difficult to write about the fight my husband and I had last week, etc.

I really appreciate your honesty and truly admire your blog. I could not agree with you more on many of your truths in this post :)

Good for you!
Although I have to admit that I like Paula Deen recipes, ha ha! I've been to Savannah though and did not go to her restaurant, so maybe that gets me of the hook... maybe?!
Also don't like Lilly Pullitzer. I used to like Vera Bradley, but that was because I'm originally from Indiana {where VB is based} and I liked it before they were popular.
Also not a trendy dresser! My favorite apparel is jeans + a hooded sweatshirt, and sometimes I think that one of the best things about being a nurse is wearing scrubs, ha ha!
I like to think that the reason why I write is to share my life. If that means that I only have one reader {who also happens to be one of my sisters}, then that's fine with me!

Good for you! A lot of times I'll read the argument that people don't want to be controversial, or bring negativity to their blogs because they don't think people want to read it. I even read once one woman said that your blog is not your best friend so you shouldn't be airing your dirty laundry to it! The thing is, we all blog for different reasons. If all you care about is readers and followers, then fine, but don't judge those of us who want to journal our real lives, you know? "Imperfect" is in my blog title for a reason. :)

LOVE this post...you crack me up but I can totally relate! Especially on the "who would aggravate you" bit...I seriously occasionally find myself reading blogs of people like that and I don't know why...guess the same reason I watch Toddlers & Tiaras...lol. :)

I'm the same way. I'll type out a tweet or a post and then I'll just delete it because I think it's too lame, or bitchy or stupid or too anything! and I have no idea why I care about what everyone else thinks. I like the idea of blogging FOR ME. I judge people like nobody's business and although not confirmed I can only imagine how many of mine are wrong!

I've wanted to write about this for so long, and have a long time ago, but wanted to again :) I am absolutely real on my blog, but I mostly tend to post the good, with some struggles, etc.. I have so many people who read, and a couple, well mainly Hubby's Mom, who take things I say, pick out what they want, maybe even change them to be false and then spread it around the entire family as fact. Hubby knows, and there are times when I really want to write something on my mind/heart but I don't feel like I can, so I just post the safe, and some struggles are safe to post, but it makes me a little sad and upset that I can't be deeper sometimes for fear of false rumors being spread and magnified. But everything is still real! :)

HAH. I have a million collared shirts, LOVE Paula Deen, and own more Lilly than I care to admit.

...and you know what? I still enjoy your blog. Doesn't really matter to me. I mean, if we all liked the same thing, why would we read each others blogs in the first place? More importantly, your child is ADORABLE. It's SICK she's so cute. HA.
